Gonzaga in free-fall; keep an eye on Illinois State

The Zags of Gonzaga have lost four of five, and while we know they remain one of the top mid-major programs in the country, they have slipped to No. 5 in the new CCH Mid-Majors poll.

Gonzaga’s last loss, a 66-65 nailbiter at Utah, dropped its record to 7-4. The Zags have a chance to right the ship at Tennessee on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Illinois State has quietly put together a 14-game winning streak to start the season and has moved up to No. 9 in the Mid-Majors poll. The undefeated Redbirds feasted on a soft non-conference schedule, playing no power conference teams. Illinois State has been overlooked by most because of its easy schedule, however, the Redbirds have ended any talk that they can’t play with good teams.

Illinois State whipped MVC pre-season favorite Creighton (Mid-Majors No. 11) 86-64 in its last outing and blew out Evansville (Mid-Majors No. 21) by 30 in the game before that. The Redbirds are 3-0 in the MVC and it looks like they are for real and, if they punch a ticket for the Big Dance, could surprise a team or two.

Here’s the poll:

  1. Butler
  2. Xavier
  3. Memphis
  4. Davidson
  5. Gonzaga
  6. St. Mary’s
  7. Dayton
  8. Rhode Island
  9. Illinois State
  10. Charleston
  11. Creighton
  12. Brigham Young
  13. UNLV
  14. Utah State
  15. Alabama-Birmingham
  16. Virginia Military
  17. Miami-Ohio
  18. George Mason
  19. Utah
  20. Western Kentucky
  21. Evansville
  22. Temple
  23. Drake
  24. Portland State
  25. Cleveland State
